ANU SPRINT REGATTA PROVISIONAL FORMAT

The sprint regatta will be organised in a 'match racing' format. There will be a prize for the winner of each event.

Match racing

Each event will be structured as a series of 'match races', that is, races involving two boats only. The winner of each race will progress to the next round, culminating in a final, in which the two remaining boats will compete for the prize. The exact format of each event will depend on the number of competitors. We propose the following scheme.

Suggested format for each event

2 Boats. If there are only two entries, the winner will be determined in a single race between them.

3 Boats. If there are three entries, the winner will be determined over three races. The first two entries will compete in the first race. The losing boat will compete with the third entry in a second race. The winner of this race will then compete with the winner of the first race for the prize.

4 Boats. If there are four entries, the winner will be determined over three races. The first and second entries will compete in one race and the third and fourth entries will compete in another. The winners will proceed to a final, where they will compete for the prize. We will try to ensure that the two preliminary races are of roughly equal standard.

5 Boats. If there are five entries, the winner will be determined over six races. The first and second entries will compete in one race and the third and fourth entries will compete in another. The losing boat from the first two races that has the slowest time will then compete with the fifth entry. The winners of each race, and the fastest loser from the first two races, will proceed to the next round. The prize- winner will then be determined in accordance with the format for an event with four entries. Because this format may present some inconvenience, we will try to encourage a sixth entry.

6 Boats. If there are six entries, the winner will be determined over six races. There will be three races between the first and second, third and fourth, and fifth and sixth entries respectively. The three winning boats and the losing boat with the fastest time will also proceed to the next round. The prize-winner will then be determined in accordance with the format for an event with four entries.

7 Boats. If there are seven entries, the winner will be determined over seven races. There will be three races between the first and second, third and fourth, and fifth and sixth boats respectively. The seventh entry will then compete in a fourth race with the losing boat with the fastest time. The prize-winner will then be determined in accordance with the format for an event with four entries.

8 Boats. If there are eight entries, the winner will be determined over seven races. There will be four races between the first and second, third and fourth, fifth and sixth, and seventh and eight boats respectively. The winner of each race will go through to the next round. The prize-winner will then be determined in accordance with the format for an event with four entries.

9 Boats. If there are nine entries, the winner will be determined over twelve races. There will be four races between the first and second, third and fourth, fifth and sixth, and seventh and eighth entries respectively. The four winning boats and the three fastest losing boats will progress to the next round. The slowest losing boat will then compete in a fifth race with the ninth entry, and the winner will progress. The prize-winner will then be determined in accordance with the format for an event with eight entries.

10 Boats. If there are ten entries, the winner will be determined over twelve races. There will be five heats (between entries one and two, three and four etc). The five winners, and the three fastest losers will progress to the next round. The prize-winner will then be determined in accordance with the format for an event with eight entries.

11 Boats. If there are eleven entries, the winner will be determined over thirteen races. There will be five heats (between entries one and two, three and four etc). The five winning boats, and the two fastest losing boats will progress to the next round. The third fastest losing boat will compete with the ninth entry in a sixth race, and the winner will also proceed to the next round. The prize-winner will then be determined in accordance with the format for an event with eight entries.

12 Boats. If there are twelve entries, the winner will be determined over thirteen races. There will be six heats (between entries one and two, three and four etc). The six winning boats, and the two fastest losing boats, will progress to the next round. The prize-winner will then be determined in accordance with the format for an event with eight entries.

13 Boats. If there are thirteen entries, the winner will be determined over fourteen races. There will be six heats (between entries one and two, three and four etc). The six winning boats, and the fastest losing boat, will progress to the next round. The second fastest losing boat will compete with the thirteenth entry in a seventh race, and the winner will also proceed to the next round. The prize-winner will then be determined in accordance with the format for an event with eight entries.

14 Boats. If there are fourteen entries, the winner will be determined over fourteen races. There will be seven heats (between entries one and two, three and four etc). The seven winning boats, and the fastest losing boat, will progress to the next round. The prize-winner will then be determined in accordance with the format for an event with eight entries.

2 Boats: 2 races.
3 Boats: 3 races.
4 Boats: 2 races.
5 Boats: 4 races (but more likely 3).
6 Boats: 3 races.

How many races are there likely to be on the day? Will there be time to fit them all in?
