Handicapping Masters Races 2005 - 06
New Handicaps
At various Regatta Planning meetings since April 2005, it has been proposed to "tighten" the standard masters handicaps between age groups from those used previously in the ACT. Research has been undertaken and new standard times derived for crews to undertake the 1000 m course. These times have been converted into handicaps as shown in the table below for easy comparison with the last Members Handbook data (2001-2002). Mixed crew handicap has been taken as the mean of Women and Men handicaps for the appropriate event.

Coxless boats competing in coxed events attract an additional 7 sec penalty.
Mixed crews are to have an equal number of men and women, excluding the coxswain.
Handicap Application
It has been agreed at the various meetings since April 2005 that in order to make Masters Races more competitive, the handicap to be applied will be based on the Crew Predicted Time for the Masters crew if this exists. The Regatta Management database calculates this time automatically by adding the time of the last race to the previous Crew Predicted Time and dividing the result by two. This is done for each crew member so when crew members are changed, the new Crew Predicted Time reflects the new crew. The database will then calculate the handicap based on Crew Predicted Time for each crew in the race.
Where no Crew Predicted Time exists for a crew, the database will calculate the average corrected same age group Crew Predicted Time for all crews with a Crew Predicted Time in the race and then apply the handicap correction using the table above to this crew.
Because Mixed Crew data contaminates the Crew Predicted Times, all Mixed Crew events will be handicapped using the table above for this season.
In the event of handicaps based on Crew Predicted Time being challenged at draw night and the challenge is accepted, then the race will be handicapped using the Masters Handicap table above.
Due to the experimental nature of the handicapping system this season, Masters events will not be included in the Men or Women Point Score tables. Instead, a separate Masters Point Score table will be maintained for Point Score Regattas.
