During April ACT Rowers went to Penrith for the Australian Selection Regatta. At the end of this regatta 4 ACT junior rowers and 2 coaches were named in the team. Nick Barnier and Zac Cleaver have been joined by Angus Morton and David Wright to make up the Junior Mens Quad coached by Regan Sanders while Veronica Tamsitt and Christabelle Northam have been named in the Junior Womens Pair coached by Gordon Marcks. These athletes will be competing at the Junior World Championships in Beijing during August 2007. Junior representatives must largely self fund their trip to the championships and are seeking support from several sources. There has been some generous support already, but our representatives’ major fundaraising event is a dinner and auction. A flyer with the details for this event is here. If you can’t come to the dinner, some direct support would be appreciated. Thank you for your support and we hope to see you at the dinner.

The ACT Rowing Association notes with regret, the passing of Michelle Simpson, on 26 April 2007, following a long and valiant battle with cancer. A keen rower herself, Michelle had played an instrumental role in the development of rowing over the past 15 years, initially with the Canberra Rowing Club, and more recently, was instrumental in the formation of The Lake Tuggeranong Rowing Club. Always a great contributor and motivator, Michelle would work tirelessly on all aspects of her clubs’ development, from holding office on committees, initiating rower development programs, implementing learn-to-row sessions, completing grant applications for the purchase of club equipment, general fundraising and assistance on a day to day level. Over and above this considerable contribution, and forsaking an increasingly complex health status, Michelle was also a willing contributor to the rank of Boat Race Officials, those folk tasked with the safe and efficient running of our club regatta’s. Over the years, Michelle has continued to make a strong contribution to, not only her home club, but to the ACT Rowing Association in general. ACTRA is greatly saddened by her passing, and extends its most sincere condolences to her family, her fellow club members, and her many friends within and outside of our sport.
