The last regatta of the ACT 2009-10 season is the Sprint Regatta scheduled for

The draw for this weekend’s ACT Rowing Championships is available here.
An opportunity has come up for ACT rowers to participate as subjects in some
testing being conducted by a PhD student based in the Physiology Department of
the Australian Institute of Sport. The testing quantifies
individuals’ responses to supplements used by rowers (caffeine and sodium
bicarbonate) when completing repeated 2000m efforts (in a similar format to a
major regatta).
The testing will begin the week after the ACT Championships (the week of 15th
March), and will be completed by 2 April (Good Friday). Each rower
completes a total of 6 x 2000m erg tests. There are three tests in the
first week, then one week with no testing, and three more tests in the final week
(the week of 29th March). Testing is done between 6am and 8am on the
designated days.
Each participant will receive information on his/her performance after taking
each supplement, and from the results we can recommend the most suitable
supplements (for that athlete) to use in preparation for competition. Please note
that this does not breach any sporting or ASADA codes. Details of the study can
be found here.
If you would like to participate, or to find out more information, please email
to Amelia.Carr@ausport.gov.au ASAP .
Black Mountain Rowing Club is hosting drinks by the Lake from 5.30 to 7.30 on
Saturday 13th. This is to help celebrate the end of the competitive season
and to provide an opportunity for rowers to thank the BROs. Details are on
the BMRC website.

An Amy Gillett Bike ride is being held in Canberra on Sunday 14th
March. This is the second day of the ACT Rowing Championship Regatta.
Rowers are probably aware that Amy Gillett (nee Safe) was a dual world Junior Champion rower and rowing Olympian. To support this worthwhile cause, ACTRA
proposes that the regatta will stop to applaud the leading peloton as it passes.
In addition, the ACT Championship womens 1X will be dedicated to the memory
of Amy Gillett. For those from Amy’s generation of elite rowers get on your
bike and contact Angie Holbeck.

David Bagnall
