The water police are patrolling the lake during rowing hours, riding their blue and white jetskis.

Rowing boat coaches in tinnies were pulled over and given spot checks this morning.

It is important that all the required equipment is present (torch, life jackets, bailer, anchor, paddle and fire extinguishers ).

The police reminded us that powered boat drivers’ licences are not only required for any motorised craft capable of travelling at more than 5 knots but must also BE CARRIED WITH YOU WHEN ON THE WATER.

This is a timely reminder to check that, if you are driving a tinny, you have all the necessary gear and that you are carrying your boat driver’s licence with you.

The Rowing ACT Committee is pleased to announce the following crews have been selected to represent the ACT at the upcoming Australian National Masters Championships.

Both the mens and womens eight selections are ongoing. It is expected an announcement will be made early next week.

The Committee would like to thank the selectors for their tireless work in particular Donna Martin.

Congratulations to all who have been selected and we wish you the best of luck.

The 2013 Australian National Championships was a great success for all of the ACT’s clubs and schools that competed. Every program had a good regatta but particular highlights included wins for Canberra Girls Grammar in the Women’s Under 17 Coxed Quad Scull and ANUBC in the Men’s Club Double. Notable second places for Canberra Rowing Club in composite crews in the open fours and lightweight quad provided an excellent reward for Canberra RC’s superb efforts in the local competition, indicating the club can still be among Australia’s elite.

All of the ACT school programs had some success at this year’s nationals however special mention must be made of the efforts of Marist College, our youngest club, who participated in their first ever Australian Rowing Championships and made the A final of the Men’s Under 17 Coxed Quad Scull.

Having saved the best for last special mention must be made of Angus Moore of CRC. Angus achieved Gold in the Men’s Under 23 Coxless Pair and a great Silver in the Opens Men’s Fours, beating the bow and stern fours form the US men’s eight . Then on the final day of competition Angus raced for Australia in the first round of the Samsung World Cup. An incredibly close race Moore’s crew finished ahead New Zealand and Great Britain beaten only by a fellow Australian crew which included James Chapman and Joshua Dunkley-Smith both of whom rowed in the silver medal winning Men’s Four at the London Olympics.

The National Capital Authority (NCA) advises that Yarralumla Bay is closed to all recreational uses following discharge of raw sewage into Lake Burley Griffin.

Based on advice from the ACT Health Directorate, it is unsafe to use the lake for any activities that involve contact with the water such as swimming, canoeing, recreational boating, rowing or fishing.

Water samples will be taken this morning. The NCA will continue to closely monitor water quality and will re-open the area as soon as two sets of water quality results indicate bacteria levels are within safe parameters. It is anticipated the lake will reopen next week.

Lake user groups have been notified of the leak and warning signs are being posted around the exclusion area.

Yarralumla Beach does not appear to have been affected and remains open.

The dates for the 2013 Winter Time Trial Series are now available. We look forward to seeing you out in the cold.

# 18th & 19th May
# 22nd & 23rd June
# 27th & 28th July
# 24th & 25th August
# 21st & 22nd September

Please note this year entries for each Winter Time Trial will close at 9pm on the Friday preceding the time trial.

The format of the event is singles and pairs on the Saturday, doubles, quads, fours and eights on Sunday. Please note; double entries for Saturday will no longer be accepted. We received many complaints last year that these boats were obstructing single scullers.

The series winner for each category of boat is determined by a point score based on handicap times. Crews/scullers receive one point for each race they complete, plus one point for each opponent in that race that they beat on handicap time. Crews can accumulate series points provided they do not change more than 25% of their crew from one time trial to the next.

Black Mountain Rowing Club would like to extend an invitation all in the ACT rowing Community to their boat naming ceremony to take place on the 13th April 2013. For details of the ceremony including history please view the following documents.
