After qualifying for 12 out of a possible 16 A finals at the Australian University Games in Sydney, ANU’s rowers went on to win 6 medals, including 2 gold.

The athletes enjoyed ideal racing conditions on the final day at Penrith Lakes to notch up their tally of 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.

The gold medals were in the mixed four (Dave Wright, Luke Letcher, Cara Grzeskowiak, Maddy Farrar and Gen Kinoshita) and the women’s double (Maddy Farrar and Cara Grzeskowiak). The silver medals were in the men’s single (Luke Letcher) and women’s single (Cara Grzeskowiak). The bronze medals were in the women’s lightweight quad scull (Georgina Ims, Sabina Bertuzzi, Siobhan Tobin and Anna Peterson) and the men’s lightweight four (Nathan Ryan, Stephen Morris, Mark Dawkins and Will Stoltz).

The result placed ANU third of the nineteen participating universities in the overall regatta point score, behind Sydney and Melbourne.

The result was a tribute to the ANU Boat Club coaches who have worked all through the Canberra winter to prepare the team, including Richard Furmage, Avril Baker, Michael White, Katrina MacKenzie, Renae Domaschenz and Nick Hunter. Thanks also to the pre-event logistics planning of Katie Tagg and other members of the club committee.

The result was also a product of invaluable equipment and funding support from ANU Sport, and of funding from the Australian National University through a Student Services and Amenities Fee grant.

The 33 athlete team was the largest intervarsity rowing team that ANU has sent away in the 50 years of rowing at ANU.

ANU’s mixed four of Maddy Farrar, Cara Grzeskowiak, David Wright, Luke Letcher and cox Gen Kinoshita powered away from a high calibre Sydney University crew in the final. ANU was the defending title holder in this event.

The win capped off a great day for the ANU team, which qualified for the A finals in 12 of the 16 Games rowing events. Two of the finals were raced today, with the remaining finals to be held on Friday.

The ANU team is looking to improve on its third place in the overall rowing rankings, achieved at last year’s event.

A group of Lake Tuggeranong RC rowers including many junior and novice rowers had a very enjoyable trip away on the 20th of September to participate in the Head of the Shoalhaven. This event included a 7km Head race first thing in the morning and a 400m sprint regatta throughout the day. Our junior rowers all participated in the scenic Head race in quads and a four. Both the open boys crew and U19 girls crew won their categories.

The sprint regatta commenced shortly after the last boat finished the Head race. Parents and supporters enjoyed an ideal spectator location on the bank of the river, while our rowers enthusiastically competed in many of the sprint regatta races. The junior LTRC rowers did very well and added several medals to their Head race trophies as souvenirs of the day. 12 of our 19 rowers managed to come home with medals and trophies from this event.

This event is a very relaxed, fun day out and proved to be a wonderful way for our new competitive rowers to experience their first regatta. Our thanks go to the Shoalhaven RC for hosting this event and sharing their facilities with us. Lake Tuggeranong RC rowers will return again to the Shoalhaven River to enjoy this relaxed regatta.

We need your help!

Each year Rowing ACT runs a set of competitive regattas for the enjoyment of all rowers. For these regattas to be successful, there is a group of volunteers working to ensure regatta races run safely, with fairness and on-time. All three ingredients are essential for competitor and spectator enjoyment.

The average Rowing ACT regatta normally requires at least 20 officials and helpers to run. They are volunteers performing both officiating and administrative roles, covering umpiring, starting, judging, marshalling, boat driving, setup and recording roles. Without sufficient volunteers, Rowing ACT cannot effectively run regattas to time with adequate safety and fairness. Maintaining a healthy pool of volunteers is essential to conduct safe and enjoyable regatta events.

To keep our volunteer base healthy, Rowing ACT needs your help to identify and encourage volunteers to sign up for the upcoming regatta season. Most roles are simple to perform and require minimal knowledge of rowing. The main commitment is your time on regatta days, and a willingness to work to ensure our regattas are safe, enjoyable and successful. For those new to officiating or not familiar with rowing technicalities, you will not be thrown in at the deep end, nor expected to learn all the technicalities of rowing. Volunteers will be trained to perform assigned roles within their abilities and willingness to undertake. For those who are interested in taking a more enduring interest in officiating, support to obtain formal officiating accreditation is also available – although this is not necessary to become a valued or regular volunteer.

To ensure that you are prepared to start officiating, a training day will be held this year at Canberra Girls Grammar School Aquatic Centre on the 26th of October 2014. The training day will commence at 10:00 am.

The commitment sought from volunteers is flexible. If you are available for days when regattas are held, your help will be appreciated. If you are not due to other commitments, that is Ok as well. Any regattas you can assist at will be valued. Although most volunteers commit to the full duration of a regatta, we are also able to accommodate half day commitments, which may run from the start to noon, or noon through to completion.

If you are able to assist as a volunteer, please contact Rowing ACT by e-mail, or call Michael Cusack on 0406376666. We will welcome you at the training day and look forward to joining the friendly group of volunteers who keep our regattas running smoothly.
