Lake Users,

The National Capital Authority (NCA) wishes to advise the community and Lake Burley Griffin (the Lake) recreational users that the Lake is closed to swimming and full emersion activities. This follows advice from the ACT Environmental Protection Agency that the Queanbeyan Sewage Treatment Plant has gone into diversion mode, resulting in the heavy rainfall inflows exceeding normal operational capacity.

Warning signs have been erected around the Lake and sporting groups notified. The risk to human health is low due to a high dilution rate from recent rains, but precautionary measures are being undertaken. Further measures, including washing your skin with water and soap after contact is encouraged.

Currently, the duration of this closure is unknown but the NCA do expect to keep the Lake closed for approximately a week at this stage, ending 9 September 2016.

WHAT: Lake Burley Griffin closed to primary contact

WHERE: All of Lake Burley Griffin

WHEN: Saturday, 3 – 9 September 2016. Further closures to be advised.

The recent rain has washed a number of logs into the East/Central Basin’s of LBG.

The lake contractors have been notified that this area needs clearing.

Crews are advised to steer clear of affected areas until clearing has occurred.

ACT rowers Luke Letcher and Caleb Antill were part of a winning World Champion Under 23 Quad Scull crew competing overnight at Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The two ACT scullers teamed up with Mosman rowers Tom Schramko and Robert Black, and trained in Perth under Antonio Maurogiovanni, prior to departing for Europe. The crew took the lead following their typical powerful start, showed great rhythm in the middle stages of the race, and then held off the fast finishing New Zealanders in the last 50 metres. A great race against a quality field, and a credit to Antonio’s coaching. Local coaches also contributed to the development of these rowers: Luke is coached by Lyall McCarthy, and Caleb by Renae Domaschenz and Andrew Randell.

Caleb and Luke are the ACT’s first World Rowing Under 23 Gold medalists since 2003. Their crew is Australia’s first gold medal winning Under 23 men’s crew since 2004.

Mention should also be made of ACT sculler Cara Grzeskowiak’s fifth place in the Women’s Under 23 Single Sculls Championship. This was a credible result, against a formidable field, and points to Cara’s continued progress. Cara was coached by Vicky Spencer.

The U21 Australian Team will arrive in Canberra for a pre departure camp on Thursday September 1st until they leave for NZ on Monday September 5th.

They will be training after 8am most sessions.

Please show courtesy to these crews as they conduct their training.

Thank you in advance.
