Australian Running Festival Road Closures 8-9 April

The Australian Running Festival, incorporating The Canberra Times Marathon will be held the weekend of
April, 8-9, 2017.
Course routes have been designed to reduce the impact on the local community; however, at various times
over the weekend there will be some streets that will be temporarily closed and some others that will have
temporary traffic flow restrictions in place. This might affect some rowers and access to certain sheds.
Saturday, April 8 — Time of events:
10km Course – 7am to 9am
5km Course – 9am to 10ay

Sunday, April 10 – Time of events:
Ultra Marathon – 6.05am to 1.00pm
Canberra Marathon – 6:25am to 1:00pm
Half Marathon – 7.45am to 11.00am

Canberra Rowing Club Win the 2016/17 Point Score Premiership

The ACT summer rowing season has wrapped up following the Head of the Lake regatta.

Canberra Rowing Club (CRC) have won their 5th consecutive Point Score Premiership, collecting both the Women’s and Men’s Premierships along the way.

The Premiership race was close leading into the final regatta of the season at the ACT Championships, with CRC, Radford and Black Mountain Rowing Club (BMRC) all still in contention. A dominant performance from CRC at the double-points Championships secured them the pennant. They won the Phere Niki Trophy for Most Successful Club at the ACT Championships as well as the prestigious Uriarra Cup (Open Men’s Eight), Banjo Cup (Men’s Four) and President’s Shovel (Men’s 2nd Grade Eight). Radford just edged out BMRC for 2nd on the season Point Score, with only 16.75 points separating the neighbouring clubs.

The Australian National University Boat Club (ANUBC) women also enjoyed a successful ACT Championships, winning the Jubilee Cup (Women’s Open Eight). ANUBC’s Jilly Roberts beat her doubles partner Sarah Larkin to win the Scullers Cup for Champion Women’s Single Sculls.

Canberra Girls Grammar School won the Greg Welsh Cup (Schoolgirl’s Eight).

The ACT Head of the Lake featured school versus school racing for the last event on the summer season calendar. Canberra Girls Grammar School was the Girls Point Score winner, with Marist taking out the Boys Point Score.

The ACT Championships and Head of the Lake were the final hit-outs for rowers heading to the Australian Championships at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, 27 March – 2 April.

Cancellation of Masters Regatta on Easter Saturday

Rowing ACT has decided to cancel the proposed regatta that was to be held on Easter Saturday.

The Association has made this decision due to burnout of our Boat Race officials, and our potential difficulty in being able to have enough officials to manage the regatta.

We apologise to any competitors who had planned to compete. If you are locally based, we seek your assistance in swelling our numbers of Boat Race officials next season

Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet to reopen on 13 March

On Canberra Day (next Monday) the Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet will re-open and this provides an opportunity to celebrate its rejuvenation. The jet will operate three times during the day (8:00-10:00am, 3:00-5:00pm, 7:00-9:00pm) and perhaps some of our crews that are out training could venture down into Central Basin in the 8am to 10am time slot to provide some color and movement as a backdrop for the thousands of photos that will be taken of the jet on the day.

SELECTION OF ACT MASTERS REP CREWS FOR 2017

Rowing ACT has announced the process by which ACT State crews will be selected for the 2017 Australian Masters Rowing Championships. The Inter-state events are:
Women’s Eight
Women’s Quad
Men’s Eight
Men’s Quad
All nominees will be required to complete a 1000m time trial at 8am on Sunday 19th March 2017. Please send crew and sculler entries to rowingact@gmail.com
No seat fees will be charged for these events.
Separate time trials/races will be conducted for quad scull nominees in single sculls and for eight oared nominees in coxless fours.
If less than eight crews (or scullers) nominate for any of the time trials, then they will be conducted as a straight race. No Masters handicaps will be applied, i.e. all crews (or scullers) will start together.

Interstate Quads
Nominees wishing to be considered for the quads must trial in single sculls.
Selection of the quads will be based on the rankings from the sculler trials, as well as ensuring each crew averages 50 years or greater at December 31, 2016.

Interstate Eights
Nominees wishing to be considered for the eights will trial in coxless fours.
The average age of the trialling fours must be 50 years or greater, and all crew members must have nominated and be available to compete in the state crew. The first two fours across the line will be selected as the state eight-oared crew. Crews averaging less than 50 years will not be considered for selection.

Reminder to put lights on boats before dawn and after sunset

We have received reports of crews and scullers without lights when training in darkness before dawn.

All clubs should have a supply of lights. All crews should check the batteries in the lights to ensure they are visible.

Kayak events on Molonglo and LBG on 25th and 26th February

Rowers have been asked to avoid the Molonlgo River all day on Saturday 25 February and be alert to kayakers on East Basin, Central basin and West Basin on the morning of Sunday 26 February.

The Burley Griffin Canoe Club is hosting the NSW State Marathon Championships on Saturday 25th February.
The event will be run all day (8am till 5pm), on the Molonglo River between Dairy Rd Bridge and the Hospice.

Please avoid the Molonglo River on Saturday 25 February.The Burley Griffin Canoe Club is conducting its annual ‘Burley Griffin Bash’ paddle event on Sunday morning. The event will be conducted over courses on the Molonglo River, East Basin, Central Basin and West Basin around Springbank and Spinnaker Islands, between 8am and 12 noon.
Scullers and crews are asked to keep a very keen lookout for paddlers in those areas on the day.
