ACT at the Youth Cup

The first days racing began with Caleb Antill, who despite racing ill, managed to defeat the Victorian sculler to come 1st in the B final of the men’s division one single scull. This was the first of four B final wins for the day. Two ACT crews qualified for the A finals, Francis Snelgar (ANUBC) in division 2 of the men’s single, and, Nicholas del Rio (CGS) and Alexander Carey (ANUBC) in the men’s division 2 of the coxless pair.

Day two began with ACT’s men’s coxless fours knocking out the Victorian crew to qualify for the A final. Next, was the women’s coxless quad which pushed ahead of South Australia and Western Australia to qualify for the A final in which they came a respectable fifth. The third order of the day was the men’s coxless quad drawing a tough heat but finishing well with a B final win. Saturdays racing concluded with ACT women’s coxless four (which included a very last-minute replacement, Alyce Dowling) racing against a well-disciplined Tasmanian crew. The ACT crew secured a close 2nd in the B final.

The final day opened with the men’s eight defeating Victoria and taking the final place in the A final of the men’s eights – a feat not achieved by an ACT youth cup crew for more than five years. The guys then finished with a respectable sixth place behind NZ, SA, NSW, QLD and WA.

Our women’s eight raced nobly against tough competition in the heat to find themselves in the B final. They started the final with the clear intention of getting out in front and staying there. Fortunately by the 2000 metre mark the ACT women had opened up more than an 8 second margin to comfortably claim 1st place to Western Australian.

Thank you to all those who competed along with coaches Chris Polyichanin, Renae Domaschenz, James Hammond, Jason Cain and Team Manager, Caroline Pijpers for their extraordinary voluntary commitment. Getting up early and training during the winter in Canberra shows true dedication to the rowing sport. A particular thank you to Alyce Dowling (CGS) who joined the team 30 minutes before the team departed to replace someone due to an unfortunate injury.
