Water police are checking coaching/safety boats

The water police are patrolling the lake during rowing hours, riding their blue and white jetskis.

Rowing boat coaches in tinnies were pulled over and given spot checks this morning.

It is important that all the required equipment is present (torch, life jackets, bailer, anchor, paddle and fire extinguishers ).

The police reminded us that powered boat drivers’ licences are not only required for any motorised craft capable of travelling at more than 5 knots but must also BE CARRIED WITH YOU WHEN ON THE WATER.

This is a timely reminder to check that, if you are driving a […]

Weston Park a great venue for ISRA regatta

Over the weekend Rowing ACT ran the Independent Schools Rowing Association Regatta with spectators based at Weston Park, rather than the traditional Lady Denman Drive finish area. The very successful regatta indisputably demonstrated why Weston Park is superior for spectators over the weekend. The shelter from wind at Weston Park provided balmy T-shirt wearing conditions for spectators, while officials at the finish wore snow apparel to minimise the wind chill. Shelter from the sun under the trees for both competitors and spectators is also an advantage of Weston Park, with competitors less likely to come away sunburned.

Canberra Centenary celebration on the Lake

On 11th March 2013 Lake Burley Griffin will be the Centre of activities for Canberra’s Centenary celebration, and rowers can participate with your crew at this amazing event. The organisers are looking for volunteer crews to row a loop of Central basin during the afternoon’s entertainment and view the
“Raising of Country” ceremony near the Carillon at 3:45pm. We have agreed that the rowers will be dressed in fancy dress, and that the best fancy dressed crew will win a prize. All participants will receive a Centenary volunteer t-shirt. The row is planned to take about one hour around […]

Head of the Molonglo results

The second annual Head of the Molonglo was held for this morning in perfect conditions on Lake Burley Griffin.
Fourteen crews participated (the same number as the initial Head of the Yarra!). The wind picked up after the last crew finished and we had superb conditions for the race.
The association is aware that north side clubs were inconvenienced by road closures for the Iron man triathlon. These road closures were listed on the NCA website but the local ramifications were not apparent to RACT. So excellent perseverance of the various northside rowers to surmount this hurdle to […]

Logs in the Lake

Dear Rowers (and other lake users),
As of this morning (Saturday 13 October) West Basin and part of central Basin have large numbers of logs that have been flushed into the lake following the recent rain.
For fragile boats, like most rowing shells, this effectively closes these parts of the lake. The NCA has responded to the crisis and their contractor will start clearing the logs this afternoon.

We understand that the NCA will remove the logs from west to east stopping the front of flotsam from moving further west. As of this morning the front had reached […]

Two more pontoons: call for volunteers

Two more Connect-a-Dock pontoons will be arriving tomorrow (Friday, 3 May) at 7:30am. These were paid for and will be the property of ADFA and Canberra Girls Grammar, although they are a resource that improves the sporting infrastructure on the lake. As opposed to the RACT pontoons already installed in Yarralumla Bay and at Capital Lakes, these two pontoons will be permanent, and will provide drought proof safe boating for the two institutions.
For those who have free time the unloading from the container and assembly will start at 7:30am and continue throughout the day under the supervision of […]

Proposal to change rower status rules

Rowing ACT replaced its former status rules with Rower Scores into local regattas to provide fairer racing for all participants for 2006. This was a big experiment that eliminated School and most masters events in an attempt to get bigger fields and better racing for all concerned. The ACT gained fuller fields using most of the lanes on our course, and consequently shorter regattas, and therefore more efficient use of our BROs’ time. The Victorians who pioneered the scheme reported increased participation following on from adopting Rower Scores.
However in the ACT Rower Score had shortcomings: good Masters women […]
