Access between CGS and ACTAS sheds: fallen tree

A large casuarina tree between the CGS boatshed and ACTAS boatshed compound has dropped a branch (approx 20cm in diam) into the compound.
There was no apparent damage to equipment or individuals.
I will restrict ACTAS athlete/coaches etc. from this area but I have no control over public access or access to the area by other persons.
I have reported the matter to Canberra Connect by phone who will attend to the matter as the tree is on public land.

Rowing pontoons have arrived for Yarralumla Bay and Capital Lakes

The Connect-a-Dock pontoons have arrived from America and are safely stored at Yarralumla Bay.
Tomorrow at 9:30am a small team will connect the modules under Doug Lumsden’s guidance.
Alan Buterac will co-ordinate volunteers as he did today with the unloading.

The end product will be 2 full (4 x 10 module) pontoons and 1 shorter pontoon (4 x 8 module) as we could not fit everything in the container. Once the remaining modules arrive in the second container they can then be attached to the shorter pontoon.

Once the pontoons are pieced together we will tie them off […]

Buoys on Course removed

Following discussions with the NCA and with their approval, the association has unclipped buoys on the Yarramundi reach 1800m course before the logs had time to arrive from upstream yesterday.
James and I with assistance from Philip Winkworth have pulled up the buoys outside lanes 7, 5 and 3, leaving the buoys either side of lane 1, except near the 1800 to 1500m.
We removed all buoys at the 1800 to 1500 where the major flow exists.
Hopefully with much of the course now on the bottom of the lake it will be less vulnerable than last […]

Rowing ACT Success with 2012 ACT Sport & Recreation Grants

ACT Minister of Tourism, Sport and Recreation Andrew Barr yesterday announced that Rowing ACT had been successful with its grant applications for funding assistance from the ACT government for the coming year.
The most significant of these grants is for the purchase of three Modular Connect-a-Dock Pontoons for use on Lake Burley Griffin. These Association pontoons have been ordered specifically for the 2013 Rowing Australia Masters Championship Regatta as part of an upgrade of facilities at Weston Park. This regatta is potentially the biggest ever hosted in Canberra and the pontoons will facilitate boating at the venue. Following on […]

Dude, where’s our Lake?

Rowing ACT Media Release 8 December 2011

The sudden lowering of Lake Burley Griffin on 1 December was a shock to all lake users, when overnight it became harder to access the lake, with mud flats between the old shore line and the water and the increased risk of walking on broken glass and fishing hooks.

With little warning lake users from kayakers to swimmers and sailors have to traverse mudflats that were previously underwater to enjoy their sport following the NCA’s decision to lower the lake to fix the problems with Scrivener Dam. Lake users are discovering lots of […]
