Lake Burley Griffin being lowered for Scrivener Dam maintenance

The National Capital Authority (NCA) today announced that major engineering works at Scrivener Dam have required them to lower lake levels. It is anticipated the work will be completed within 1 to 1.5 years.

Lake Burley Griffin was lowered 200mm on the evening of Friday 25 November 2011 in anticipation of increased water inflows over the following days. This enabled safe completion of inspection and testing works below the flap gates.

Traffic Rules on the Yarramundi reach

This is a heads up regarding some refinements to training flows on the 1800 metre course, decided at an Rowing ACT meeting last night.

Over the next few weeks, the upgrade to our new seven lane course will be completed.

Lanes will be numbered from 1, the most westerly, to 7 the closest to Weston peninsula.

Crews and scullers are permitted to travel South (i.e. from Finish to Start) in lane 1 or to the West of lane 1 (lane 1 replaces the former transit “lane zero”, in the old course)

Lake Tuggeranong Rowing Club to host Adopt a School at four colleges

Rowing Australia is pleased to announce the seven clubs that have been chosen to conduct an initial ‘Adopt a School’ pilot program throughout Australia.

Following extensive negotiations with the Australian Sports Commission and the office of the Minister for Sport, RA was pleased to receive funding to conduct this ‘Adopt a School’ pilot program. The aim of the ‘Adopt a School’ program is to increase participation in rowing by engaging a wider range of schools and school athletes in a structured and well-resourced program that is safe and sustainable.

John Simson and Alex Leitch receive ACT Sport and Recreation Thanks Awards

John Simson and Alex Leitch, former long term Captains of Canberra and Black Mountain Rowing Clubs, received recognition from the ACT Government when they were presented with Thanks Awards at the National Press Club in Barton on 25 October. The Rowing Association nominated John and Alex for that long term contribution to their clubs, and specifically for their role in maintaining the Yarramundi buoyed rowing course, and reconstruction of the temporary buoy lines following destruction of the course across summer. NCA update on Yarramundi Bouyed Course

Status update for the Yarramundi Reach Rowing Course is as follows;
All works that can be executed in Tasmania are now complete. Minor maintenance and additional anchors have been completed over the last week and all parts are now being packed for Transportation to the mainland.

The booking for the Ferry from Tasmania to Melbourne still stands and all materials & tools will be loaded on and ferried across to Melbourne, leaving Tasmania on the 30/10/11. Ian and his team will also travel over at this time as well.

Geoff Northam was announced as 2011 Official of The Year at the ACT’s Sports Star of the Year

The 28th ClubsACT Sportstar of the Year Awards were held on Friday 21st October 2011 in The Ballroom at the Woden Southern Cross Club, and Geoff Northam received an award for his boat race officiating. The awards are a glittering annual event to recognise the outstanding achievements of ACT Athletes, Coaches and Administrators, and Geoff has been adjudged the outstanding sports official across all sports in the ACT in 2011. Yarramundi Buoyed Course update

Jonathon Boyd (from Brown Consulting) who the NCA have contracted to manage the course replacement indicates that:

Ian Dickinson has completed all that can be done whilst he is in Tasmania, aside from some minor maintenance on equipment and additional anchors to be made.
He has booked a crossing on the boat to Melbourne, which was the first available suitable to transport the goods, on the 30/10/11 and will also pick up the buoys on his way up to Canberra.

Latest on Yarramundi Reach Buoyed Course: Update from the NCA

Please be advised as follows in regards to the status on the Yarramundi Reach Rowing Course as of Friday 23 September 2011:

Three personnel have been working on the project in the past week.
The 30 longitudinal cables, both the SS terminals and the points for the buoys and weights where the O rings are to be attached are all complete and have been made up under tension.
The laterals will be worked on next.
Ian Dickinson has advised that little work will occur this week but has confirmed that works are still on schedule.

Yarramundi Buoyed Course update

Ken Gibson of the NCA has forwarded this message from Joel Stevenson of Brown Consulting who is the Supervising Engineer for the replacement buoyed course.
It refers to his conversations with Ian Dickinson, the Tasmanian responsible for laying our original course and those at most other venues in Australia and SE Asia.

I received an email from Ian and he has advised me that the majority of equipment has arrived except for a couple of major items. Manufacturing of the smaller items has commenced and work on the cables is due to commence next week.

Lake Tuggeranong has been re-opened for rowing

The TAMS website announced that lake quality has improved sufficiently for rowing to resume on Lake Tuggeranong. The Blue Green algae was sufficiently bad that ACT Health had closed the lake for many weeks and the keenest of LTRC rowers had relocated to Daramalan shed to row on LBG.
On Saturday afternoon LTRC and RACT had a meeting with ACT Assembly member and speaker Shane Rattenbury about lake quality issues.
Both LTRC and RACT will put in submissions to the ACT inquiry into Lake Health.
