Visiting Schools to the ACT – HOST CLUB RESPONSIBILITIES

Over the January – February period several of our member clubs will be hosting interstate schools out of their facilities. These schools will be undertaking approximately week long rowing camps on Lake Burley Griffin.

  1. Coach Boat Etiquette on Lake Burley Griffin – http://rowingact.org.au/a-reminder-on-coaching-boat-etiquette/

Careful briefing of visiting clubs will significantly reduce the possibility of conflict between these school and […]

Black Mountain Regatta – Regatta 3

The final regatta for 2014 started off with ideal conditions but, unfortunately, had to be stopped because of severe thunderstorm activity.  Regatta 1 also had to be stopped because of severe winds.  This has followed a couple of seasons where the weather has been more forgiving.  We can only hope that the 2015 regattas will run smoothly.

Thanks to all who attended the regatta, particularly those from interstate.

Below are a mix of photos from the regatta, including some of our hard working Boat Race Officials.  The images may be used by rowers and Clubs.  If anyone would like to […]

Rowing ACT adopts new Rules (/Constitution)

At a General Meeting on 3 December Member Clubs passed a special resolution to replace the Constitution with new Rules.

The trigger to the change was a cross-sport governance review conducted by the Australian Sports Commission.  The opportunity was then taken to modernise the constitution as its provisions did not contemplate a digital world including electronic commerce and the internet.   There are many changes but some of the major ones are as follows.

  • The Association  is now known formally as Rowing ACT rather than the ACT Rowing Association.
  • Plain English has been used and […]

Luke Letcher interviewed on Yabba

Yabbaguru interviewed our own Luke Letcher in line with its goal of promoting ACT sport and athletes on a cross-sport platform.  Luke is an elite rower who started his rowing career at Radford College and was trained for some time by David Bagnall.  You can find his interview here.

If you have a rowing story that would like to publish, here or on Yabba, you can submit to news@rowingact.org.au.

On this day – 26 November 1964 – the Panton Tragedy

Lake Burley Griffin opened in April 1964 with tremendous excitement but few realised at the time how dangerous it could be.   The Sydney Morning Herald in 1965 was to refer to this ‘ornamental lake’ as an icy death trap.  That is what it was on 26 November 1964, 50 years ago.

The first rowing calendar included a ‘marathon’.  It never took place.

37 year old Col Panton and 35 year old Bruce Shields had been training for the event in a tub pair coxed by Col’s son Stuart.  Col had been in Canberra for less than a year while […]
