LAKE BURLEY GRIFFIN OPEN

Lake Burley Griffin is now open to all sporting and recreational uses.

The lake has been closed since Friday morning, following a factory fire in Mitchell last week.

The Environment Protection Authority has advised that water quality results indicate the lake is safe for use.

Black Mountain Rowing Club Coaching Position

Black Mountain Rowing Club seeks a coach for a junior rowing program commencing October 2011.

The coach will run at least 2 coaching sessions a week, will need to be reliable, punctual, have good communication skills and be available to assist at local rowing regattas.

Applicants will need

• Level 1 Rowing Coach Accreditation,

• to undertake a Police Check, and

• have a NSW boat license

• The position is casual with a per session rate

Lake Closure Update

Currently the lake closure is still in effect. Please find below the NCAs latest notice published 6:48pm Saturday 17/09/11.

LAKE BURLEY GRIFFIN STILL CLOSED

Lake Burley Griffin will remain closed to all sporting and recreational uses until further notice.

The National Capital Authority will advise when the Environment Protection Authority gives the all clear to reopen the lake.

Lake Burley Griffin has been closed following a factory fire in Mitchell on Thursday night.

Contaminated materials from the factory may have entered Sullivans Creek, which flows into Lake Burley Griffin.

Urgent – Winter Time Trial 5 POSTPONED

Due to the current lake closure the Rowing ACT Winter Time Trial scheduled for this weekend has been postponed to next weekend, 24th and 25th September. To accommodate those already committed to the Level 2 coaching course, racing will commence at 8:00am rather than the usual 9:30am.

Please note Lake Burley Griffin remains closed until further notice. It is anticipated the NCA will receive the first water quality results tomorrow afternoon. We will monitor the situation and post information as we receive it. Included below, for your information, is the Lake closure notification issued by the NCA.

LAKE BURLEY GRIFFIN CLOSED

This morning’s chemical fire in Mitchell has resulted in the immediate closure of Lake Burley Griffin. This is a precautionary measure, as Mitchell is part of the Sullivan’s Creek and Lake Burley Griffin catchment.

We will be in contact with the National Capital Authority throughout the day, and will send out an update this afternoon. If you are entered in this weekend’s Winter Time Trials, please check this website late this afternoon to confirm whether or not the lake has reopened and tomorrows Time Trial will proceed.

Cold Water can kill!

Last Sunday there was a very near incident on the lake caused by a gate breakage on a single scull. This is a salient reminder of the risk of rowing in the winter in Canberra when the water temperatures are very low. Cold water can kill! Sudden immersion in cold water below 15C is potentially dangerous. The effects of cold water mean that even healthy, good swimmers can drown after a short period of time in the water.
