Some minor corrections have been made to the standard event list. The changes were: to correct the Event Description of event 33; delete Event 23 (MGB 2x) as it is a duplication of event 2.


The start list for Saturday’s event has been issued here. Updated competitor instructions are also available here. Note that the start location has been altered. Also, note that there is a major dragon boat regatta starting at 08:30 in the Lotus Bay area. Black Mountain Rowing Club Regatta – First Notice The first regatta of the ACT racing season is just over 2 weeks away – 08 November. All entries are through your club and will be due no later the weekend of 01-02 November.


A new standard event list has been issued for the coming season. This revision is the result of consultation with our rowing community and the prospect of increasing regatta participation. It will be reviewed again during the season.


The rowing selection policy for the January 2009 Youth Olympics is being revised and will be available in a few days. However, the closing date for nominations is 17:00 on this coming Friday, 24 October. Nominations (Name, Date of Birth and email address) should be submitted by email to ACTRA. Col Panton Rowing Marathon – Presentations The presentations for the Col Panton this Saturday will be held at the Canberra Rowing Club starting at 08:30. There will be a light breakfast provided for a nominal charge.


This regatta is being held 18 October. The events are:

  • 08:00 M4+ 2000m
  • 08:15 Dragon Boat exhibition race
  • 08:40 W4+ 2000m
  • 09:00 M8+ 4250m

Other lake users should keep the area between Commonwealth Park and Yarralumla Bay clear during this time. NTC Time Trial – This Friday Morning Entries for this Friday’s NTC time trial have closed. Please keep the TT course clear for the participants – AIS to Kingston from 07:00 to 07:45

The next NTC Time Trial is next Friday. Entries are due at ACTAS by 17:00 on Wednesday. Please keep the course (Yarralumla Bay to Kingston) free during the time trial period. Disher Cup Regatta – 18 October The annual Disher Cup Regatta will be run on Saturday 18 October. This colourful event is run from Central Basin to the finish at Yarralumla Bay Water Police centre. Background information is available here. Col Panton Rowing Marathon – Call for Entries The Col Panton is being held on Saturday, 25 October, racing from Kingston to Yarramundi Reach. Entries are to be submitted by Clubs – see your club for the closing time.


Dropping the LBG water level has been delayed for about 2 weeks to allow preparations to be completed. ACT Rowing Team Managers for Australian Youth Olympic Festival Announced ACTRA has named Bob Cook and James Macartney as the managers of the team for the regatta in January 2009.


The Col Panton will be starting at 07:00 on Saturday, 25 October. The early start is a return to past practice and is to avoid interference from and to other lake users. If you are not competing in the marathon, please keep out of the way between 07:00 and 08:00. Lake Burley Griffin water level to drop this week The NCA has authorised the lowering of the water level of the lake by approx 200mm on Thursday 2 October 2008 to perform restoration works on a jetty. Work has been scheduled to occur prior to the next forecast storm event this coming weekend to ensure minimal disruption to lake users. Please be careful around the shallow edges of the lake, and particularly where rocks have come near the surface in the past: near the Katie Bender memorial; east side of Black Mountain Peninsula; white posts near the AIS; either side of the rowing course in Yarramundi Reach between 250m and 1000m marks. For more information regarding this work or the lowering of the lake, please contact Peter Clarke, Senior Project officer on 02 6271 289 Traffic Flow in Kingston Area The works at Kingston Foreshore have resulted in some close misses between Capital Lakes boats and those of other clubs. Note the following guidelines:

  1. Boats travelling towards Kingston must go through the 1st or 2nd span on the Barton side of the lake.
  2. They then row down the Barton/Kingston side of East Basin – finishing on the Kingston side of the CLRC access channel.
  3. After stopping, row towards the mouth of the Molonglo River, being careful of traffic going to and from CLRC, and only turning towards Kings Avenue Bridge once you are well past CLRC.
  4. On the way to Central Basin, pass under Kings Avenue Bridge using one of the 3 spans on the Russell side of the lake.

Star Picket thrown from Commonwealth Avenue Bridge There is a report that someone threw a star picket at the steam boat Enterprise last Saturday morning as it passed under Commonwealth Avenue Bridge. Please keep a watch and warn fellow rowers if you see anything suspicious. Also report anything suspicious to the police.


The annual Disher Cup Regatta will be run on Saturday 18 October. This colourful event is run from Central Basin to the finish at Yarralumla Bay Water Police centre. Motor Boat Driver Licence Course – Call for Participants Maritime NSW is planning to conduct a course that is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday 22 October commencing at 6 PM at Canberra Grammar School, Red Hill. The course seminar will cost $10 Licence test $27 Licence fee $41 for one year, or $97 for 3 years. The licence seminar will take about 2 hours followed by the test that should take less than an hour. You can prepare by going to the Maritime NSW website. Course participants under 16 must have parental agreement to obtain a licence details of which need to be confirmed with Maritime NSW on 6297 4985 The date and time will be confirmed next week. There must be a minimum of 20 participants or the course will not be run. To be part of this, give your name to your club coordinator.
