The annual Rowing ACT Presentation was held on 8 April to celebrate the highly successful 2018 season.
Congratulations to all medallists, trophy winners and pennant winners (a full list of winners is attached), as well as all of the rowers, coxswains, coaches, boat race officials, volunteers and supporters who participated throughout the season! We look forward to another successful season ahead, with Winter Time Trials just around the corner
The Australian Rowing selectors have announced their teams for 2018, and the ACT has representatives in three categories.
Prior to the National Regatta, Caleb Antill (ANUBC) and Luke Letcher (Black Mountain RC) were announced as members of the National Quad scull to compete on the World Cup Circuit as part of Australia’s Senior A team.
The quad will compete in World Cups 2 and 3 in Poznan (Poland) and Lucerne (Switzerland) and depending on their form at the World Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
Overnight the selectors announced the Under 21 Team to compete in the Trans Tasman series of races against New Zealand in Sydney and at Lake Karapiro. Alex Grzeskowiak (Capital Lakes RC) is one of Australia’s open weight scullers, while Nathan Kennedy (ANUBC) has been selected as a lightweight sculler.
Rowing Australia also announced the Para team to represent at the World Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria in September, and Nikki Ayers (Capital Lakes RC) will make her International debut within 12 months of taking up the sport. This amazing woman has already placed second in the Inter-State race in her first season and will bring that same intensity to International competition. Also included in the para team in the coxswain’s seat is Renae Domaschenz (ANUBC). Renae’s perseverance has been rewarded with this selection for the World Championships.
Over the weekend of 14th and 15th April the ACT boated Schoolboy and Schoolgirl Pathways eights who competed against the other states in Penrith. Despite the ACT being the smallest state in terms of numbers of school aged rowers, both crews performed creditably, and got a taste of what rowing can be like after school has finished.
As foreshadowed, the 2017-18 rowing year has been rolled over. Registrations are now open for 2018-19.
We would like to invite current and former school rowers/coxswains and school leavers aged 16-25 to participate in a Rowing ACT survey. The survey consists of 15 questions and should take around 5 minutes to complete.

Background information for the survey
As revealed in Rowing ACT membership data, as well as the Australia-wide Gemba Rowing Participation Opportunities Report 2014, participation in rowing declines significantly when rowers/coxswains leave school. Rowing ACT is conducting this survey to gain further insight into the attitudes of current and former rowers/coxswains aged 16-25 years old, which will help us to address any common barriers to participating in rowing/coxing after school.
The survey poses to questions to understand why school rowers/coxswains and school leavers enjoy being part of Rowing ACT, why they choose to continue or stop being involved, and what they want to get out of being part of Rowing ACT. The results compiled at the end of this survey will help Rowing ACT understand the attitudes and aspirations of rowers/coxswains aged 16-25 years old. This information can then be used to improve the retention rate of rowers/coxswains transitioning from school rowing programs into club rowing programs as well as ongoing engagement with Rowing ACT (eg as coaches and volunteers).
Terms and conditions
Multiple National Championships and good performances in Inter-State racing were highlights for ACT rowers at Penrith over the weekend.
Youngsters Alex Grzeskowiak (Capital Lakes) and lightweight Nathan Kennedy (ANU) won their respective under 21 single sculls titles, as well as combining for a silver medal in the Under 23 double, and winning gold in the Under 23 quad scull when they combined with a pair of Queenslanders.
Para rower Nikki Ayers (Capital Lakes) had a stunning debut at the national regatta winning gold in her mixed Para four event, silver in her mixed pair, and silver in the Inter-State women’s Para Single Scull event. These results were spectacular for someone who has been rowing for less than a year.
Canberra Rowing Club’s Tom Perry may no longer be an International Representative, but he is still a force Nationally. Tom combined with three Queenslanders to win the National Lightweight Men’s quad title, and then combined with Nathan Kennedy, Will Clark and Hamish Harding (all of ANU) to come third in the Penrith Cup for Inter-State Lightweight fours. The ACT was not been on the podium for this event since 2005, so that both crew and coach Nick Garratt are to be commended.
Mosman rower Tom Schramko, who trains with the ACT squad on Lake Burley Griffin, made a big comeback to win the under 23 single scull after major health issues over the preceding year.
ANU were also placed in the under 23 Lightweight Women’s Champion Quad (2nd) and Single (third), and third in the Under 23 Men’s Lightweight Pair to round out a strong performance for the student club.
Radford College had good results with both their Schoolboy and Schoolgirl Quad sculls coming second in their respective National School Championships, while Canberra Girls Grammar grabbed third in the Under 17 Champion Girls Quad Scull. Overall it was a great regatta for the ACT, with improving results in Inter-State events.

Responsible to:
The Rowing ACT Board through the Head Coach and to the Director of Finance on accounting issues.
Primary Role:
This position is to provide support to the high-performance rowing program. The ACT high-performance program is run under the umbrella of a tri-partite agreement between Rowing Australia, ACT Academy of Sport and Rowing ACT.
Duties:
The HPP Coordinator will have the following duties.
The successful applicant will also need to work cooperatively with the Rowing ACT Executive Officer (EO). There may be some overlap in duties and backup and support may be required, particularly during absences of the EO. Counterpart requirements will exist for the EO.
Terms of Employment
The successful applicant will be employed on a part-time basis on a two-year contract, extendable by agreement between the two parties. The part-time position will be an agreed fraction of a 38-hour week, within the 0.4 to 0.6 range. Work may not only vary from day to day but over the season so applicants need to be able to manage their own time and should expect to work variable hours in accordance with the requirements of the position. There are work-from-home opportunities although some office attendance is required.
Salary:
The salary will be on an agreed percentage of the full-time equivalent of $50-60,000 (including superannuation). The actual salary will be negotiated taking into account the applicant’s experience, existing/recent salary and work experience.

Primary Role:
This position involves both administration of the sport of Rowing in the ACT and facilitating its development and growth. It will involve management, communication and coordination of the sport’s volunteers, contractors and members along with event planning and management.
Duties:
The Executive Officer will manage, coordinate and implement the policies of Rowing ACT, coordinate regattas and events, liaise with, coordinate and communicate with stakeholders, undertake accounting operations, manage records, undertake training, apply for grants and to explore other revenue opportunities.
The Executive Officer is expected to represent Rowing ACT at meetings and functions and liaise with other rowing bodies.
Accounting activities will be under the supervision and direction of the Director of Finance. The Executive Officer is required to invoice within a fortnight of events, pay bills within normal business timeframes and maintain records to meet accounting and audit standards. Financial reporting will be as required.
The successful applicant will also need to work cooperatively with the High Performance Coordinator. There may be some overlap in duties and backup and support may be required, particularly during absences of the HPP Coordinator. Counterpart requirements will exist for the HP Administrative Officer.
Other duties will be as directed.

The successful applicant will be required to attend regattas, which are run over the weekend, and provide their own transport to successfully meet the expectations of this role but will be provided with a fuel allowance.
Salary:
$55-65,000 (including superannuation) plus an annual fuel and car allowance of $1000 rolled into salary (allowing car tax deductions). The actual salary will be negotiated taking into account the applicant’s experience, existing/recent salary and work experience.

Canberra Rowing Club wins the Men’s and Women’s Premiership in 2017-18.
With the completion of Rowing ACT’s 2017-18 season of point score regattas the Canberra Rowing Club have again been victorious in our Premierships.
ANUBC have improved with their influx of new members and coaches to come second in both categories and this is a major resurgence in the students’ performance.
In third place in the Men’s flag were Black Mountain, based around their strong Masters crews.
In the Women’s competition Capital Lakes Rowing Club was third, an excellent result based around their schoolgirl crews.
Of the school programs, Radford was strongest coming in fourth in the Overall Premiership, while Marist was half a point behind Black Mountain when it came fourth in the Men’s premiership.
Inter-state clubs Shoalhaven, Kinross-Wollaroi and North Shore also had an impact with successful visits to our regattas.
The diversity of clubs that now compete at our regattas are indicative of how the ACT regattas and our venue are well regarded inter-state. These visiting clubs provide great competition for the locals and strengthen our sport.
