The current World Champion Men’s Four crew of Jack Hargreaves, Spencer Turrin, Alexander Hill and Joshua Hicks are set to make appearances at the ACT Rowing Championships this coming weekend on Lake Burley Griffin. The crew form part of a high profile line-up of entries from the AIS National Rowing Centre men’s training squad which is based here in Yarralumla.
The Reinhold Batschi Men’s NTC squad members will be racing this weekend with Hargreaves, Hill, Turrin and Hicks being the headline performers following their outstanding win at the World Rowing Championships in Florida last October. The Men’s Four crew also won silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Amongst the 22 National squad members competing this weekend, a number of rowers are ACT athletes. The ACT’s top male rowers entered include Luke Letcher and Caleb Antill (2016 World Champion U23 Quad gold medal crew members) and Tom Perry (current National Light Weight Men’s Champion single scull). The top ACT female competing this weekend is Cara Grzeskowiak (finalist U23 World Championships single scull). National squad rowers will be competing on Saturday in the Championship Men’s Singles event (7.50am heats, 9.55am finals), Men’s Pair (8.00am heats, 10.05am finals) and also an invitational Men’s Quad special event (11.25am). *
Including the NTC headliners, 591 ACT and interstate elite and age group rowers will be vying for several prestigious trophies across 2 days of racing this weekend. Rowers from Adelaide, Commercial, Glebe, Melbourne University, Mercantile, Mossman, Nagambie, Sydney University, Leichhardt, Drummoyne, Newington Masters, North Shore, Sydney, St George, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven, St Augustine’s, Torrens and UTS Haberfield Rowing Clubs will be mixing it up with rowers from our 12 ACT rowing clubs.
Rowing ACT has a new perpetual trophy – The Tarcoola Trophy which has been donated by the Letcher family. It is to be awarded to the winner of the ACT Champion U19 Men’s Single Scull.
The Letcher family have been significant contributors to ACT Rowing.
Luke has won multiple National Championships (including the National Under 19 single scull title) and is a current member of the Australian team.
Vicky is active in BMRC administration and has been on the Rowing ACT Board and can be seen on regatta days out on the water as a BRO and as a competitor.

The trophy is to be called the Tarcoola Trophy.
It is named after Tarcoola Reach.
This is the reach that runs from the AIS shed past Radford to BMRC.
This stretch of water is a favorite for the Letcher family.
FISA announced today that Rowing ACT boat race official Geoff Northam has been appointed to the jury of umpires for the World Rowing Under 23 Championships. This is great recognition for Geoff, who is a stalwart of rowing in Canberra and is one of Rowing ACT’s and Rowing Australia’s top umpires.
The Championships will be held in the historic town of Poznan in Poland from 25-29 July 2018

Applications are invited for the position of Executive Officer Rowing ACT. Applications should be submitted by 14th February 2018. The Board reserves the right to consider late applications.
Responsible to:
The Rowing ACT Board through the President and to the Director of Finance on accounting issues.
Primary Role:
This position involves both administration of the sport of Rowing in the ACT and facilitating its development and growth. It will involve management, communication and coordination of the sport’s volunteers, contractors and members along with event planning and management.
Duties:
The Executive Officer will manage, coordinate and implement the policies of Rowing ACT, coordinate regattas and events, liaise with, coordinate and communicate with stakeholders, undertake accounting operations, manage records, undertake training, apply for grants and to explore other revenue opportunities.
The development component of the job includes, facilitating the building of infrastructure for rowing, specifically regatta, administrative and storage facilities, and coordinating rowing education programs.
The Executive Officer is expected to represent Rowing ACT at meetings and functions and liaise with other rowing bodies.
Accounting activities will be under the supervision and direction of the Director of Finance. The Executive Officer is required to invoice within a fortnight of events, pay bills within normal business timeframes and maintain records to meet ccounting and audit standards. Financial reporting will be as required.
The successful applicant will be employed on the basis of a 38 hour week. Work may not only vary from day to day but varies significantly over the season so applicants need to be able to manage their own time and should expect to work variable hours in accordance with the requirements of the position. There are work-from-home opportunities although some office attendance is required. The successful applicant will be required to attend regattas and provide their own transport to successfully meet the expectations of this role but will be provided with a fuel allowance.
Salary:
$55,000 (including superannuation) plus an annual fuel and car allowance of $1000 rolled into salary (allowing car tax deductions).

- Knowledge of the sport of rowing or a proven ability to attain that knowledge quickly
- An ability and willingness to support and implement the policies and strategic directions set by the Board.
- Demonstrated experience managing, coordinating and working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders.

- High-level organisational skills including an ability to meet deadlines.

The applicant will also need to meet the following requirements.
- Possess a current driving licence and car to attend local events and meetings (interstate travel will be met by Rowing ACT).
- An ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration at the time of application or soon after taking up the position. Any costs will be met by Rowing ACT.
- A NSW General Boat Licence at the time of application or soon after taking up the position. Any costs will be met by Rowing ACT.

Rowing ACT in conjunction with the ACT Academy of Sport (ACTAS) and Rowing Australia are conducting a Talent ID program to identify and produce our next Olympians.
The Talent ID program has produced numerous Olympic representatives as well as many junior and under 23 world champions
Testing will be conducted at the Rowing ACT headquarters, 14 Alexandrina drive, Yarralumla, ACT on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th of April between 8 and 10 am
Successful applicants will be supervised by Olympic and national team coaches

Please be advised that RACT intends to fine rowers that are competing in colours/zooties that are not the registered colours/zooties of the clubs or school under which they have entered the regatta.
We are aware of the two schools who have previously advised that they are working through new zooties and may not have all rowers in the same colours.
Regrettably tomorrow’s CGGS & CGS Regatta has been cancelled.
The latest Bureau of Meteorology weather forecast for tomorrow is for rain of between 25 and 60mm, winds of 30-45km per hour and a possible thunderstorm.
As per Rule 90 (RA Rule Book as used by Rowing ACT), the above forecast conditions would present unsafe conditions for rowers and officials alike, and, as such, tomorrow’s regatta will not proceed.
RACT’s most experienced BROs have agreed that this is the correct decision.

ACT local coach Paul Thompson will be inducted into the ACT Sport Hall of Fame on Friday 1 December. Thompson currently coaches the Great Britain women’s rowing team and has previously coached Australian and British teams to Olympic glory.
He has led medal winning boats at every Olympic Games since Atlanta in 1996 and boasts an impressive individual career with an Australian championship and Kings Cup win to his name.
The 53-year-old admits he still has to pinch himself “regularly” in the midst of a sparkling career that has seen him appointed a Member of the British Empire (MBE).
“I’ve been really fortunate to coach world and Olympic champions in Australia, and world and Olympic champions in the UK,” Thompson said.
“I try and resist pulling out single ones but it’s really the people behind the performance that you get to deal with and work with. There’s some outstanding characters among them, and for that it’s been a real fantastic journey.
“When I look back, the people that [nominated] me that are on the ACT Rowing Association are volunteers, they were volunteering when I was a teenager learning how to row.
“You get a really good perspective [when you look back]. They were helping you on the way as a youngster and they’ve been great supporters ever since.”
