Masters Rowing Update from Masters Commission (ACT)

Bulletin 1 for the 2015 AMRC, to be held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, is now out and includes the event list and the indicative race schedule. (see http://www.rowingnsw.asn.au/amrc/ or (https://www.regattacentral.com/regatta/index.jsp?job_id=4043&org_id=0).

The new schedule is based on the principles developed through consultation with the masters community following the 2014 AMRC regatta.

An innovation at the 2014 AMRC was the introduction of the club medal for the first club crew across the line in each event for quads, fours and eights. This year the club medal will be extended to include doubles and pairs.

Also, as part of the 2015 AMRC regatta a new event is being introduced – the Single Club Eights (Mens and Womens).  The event will open to all age categories and will be raced with relevant handicaps. The requirement for each entry will be that the rowers and cox are all from one club. The event is expected to be hotly contested and make for some exciting finishes both for those rowing, and those barracking on the side lines!

CRC Senior Squad Trials – Sunday 11th January

Canberra Rowing Club’s Senior Men’s Squad will be conducting 1,800m sculling trials this Sunday the 11th of January along Yarramundi Reach.

These scull trails will take place between 07:00 – 07:15 and 07:45 – 08:00.

 Coaches of this squad have kindly asked other rowers to be respectful of trialing athletes.

ACT Masters Representative Crews at 2015 AMRC

Rowing ACT has announced the process by which ACT State crews will be selected for the 2015 Australian Masters Rowing Championships. The Inter-state events are:

Women’s Eight
Women’s Quad
Men’s Eight
Men’s Quad

Nominees must nominate which boats they wish to be considered for selection prior to the close of entries on 13/2/2015.

Nominees will be required to complete a 1000m time trial on Saturday 21st February 2015.
Separate time trials/races will be conducted for quad scull nominees in single sculls and for eight oared nominees in coxless fours.
Time trials will be conducted prior to other events at the regatta. If less than eight crews (or scullers) nominate for any of the time trials, then they will be conducted as a straight selection race. No Masters handicaps will be applied, i.e. all crews (or scullers) will start together.
Nominees wishing to be considered for the quads must trial in single sculls.
Selection of the quads will be based on the rankings from the sculler trials, as well as ensuring each crew averages 50 years or greater at December 31, 2015.
Nominees wishing to be considered for the eights will trial in coxless fours.
The average age of the trialling fours must be 50 years or greater, and all crew members must have nominated and be available to compete in the state crew. The first two fours across the line will be selected as the state eight-oared crew. Crews averaging less than 50 years will not be considered for selection.
No substitutions will be allowed either at the selection time trial or after selection of the crew. Crew composition remains the responsibility of the selector up to and including race day.

The selection of coxswains will take into account the recommendation of the selected crew, past and present performance in training and competition, weight, and steering ability.

Nominees for ACT representative crews must be registered members of the Rowing ACT, and must agree to abide by the Rowing Australia Code of Conduct.

Visiting Schools to the ACT – HOST CLUB RESPONSIBILITIES

Over the January – February period several of our member clubs will be hosting interstate schools out of their facilities. These schools will be undertaking approximately week long rowing camps on Lake Burley Griffin.

Rowing ACT would like to remind host clubs that it is their responsibility to brief visiting school athletes and coaches on:

Australia Day Bridge to Bridge – 26th Janurary 2014

The Bridge to Bridge rowing race is held annually as part of the Australia Day festivities in the National Capital.

The event is for mixed eights (4 men & 4 women) and runs from Kings Avenue Bridge, through Central Basin to Commonwealth Avenue Bridge. Many of the crews compete in fancy dress outfits.

The race start time will be 8.35am, from Kings Avenue Bridge.

The best viewing for spectators will be from the Central Basin foreshore between the High Court and the National Library buildings.

PLC Time trials planned on 13th January, 2015

Pymble Ladies College will be visiting Canberra in January, and will be conducting time trials on Tuesday 13th January.
The initial trial on Yarramundi Reach is planned for 6.30-8am (2 lanes only), again from 10-11.30 and then 2.30-4pm.

The Association can not exclude other users of the lake from the course at these times but we would request that all club and school coaches minimise their wash to provide optimal conditions for Pymble in their trials.

We are aware that other schools will be conducting trials during that and later weeks. If all coaches make an effort to minimise their wash, and avoid the course if possible during these various selection time trials, we can all enjoy the best training conditions in Australia.

NTC Time Trial #4 – Friday 12th / Saturday 13th December

ACTAS will be conducting the fourth of its monthly NTC Time Trials this Friday and Saturday mornings. Details below

PLEASE GIVE WAY TO PARTICIPATING ATHLETES. THEY HAVE PERMISSION TO TAKE THE SHORTEST COURSE POSSIBLE.

Friday Time Trial – Small Boats:

Start – 7:00am

Course – Participating athletes will be trailing from the white poles (finish of the Winter TT Course) to Kingston Harbor between 7:00am and 7:45am.

Saturday Time Trial – ACT Crews in Big Boats:

Start – 7:00am

Course – Participating athletes will be trailing from the white poles (finish of the Winter TT Course) to Kingston Harbor between 7:00am and 7:45am.

Black Mountain Regatta – Regatta 3

The final regatta for 2014 started off with ideal conditions but, unfortunately, had to be stopped because of severe thunderstorm activity.  Regatta 1 also had to be stopped because of severe winds.  This has followed a couple of seasons where the weather has been more forgiving.  We can only hope that the 2015 regattas will run smoothly.

Thanks to all who attended the regatta, particularly those from interstate.
