Calling for Rowing ACT 2014 Interstate Team Nominations

Rowing ACT is currently seeking Nominations from Rowers, Coxswains and Coaches for the 2014 ACT Interstate Team to compete at the Interstate Regatta on the 29th March during the Sydney International Rowing Regatta.

Nominations must be submitted online and close at 10pm on 2nd February 2014.

All individuals considering nomination must familiarise themselves with the RowingACT Selection Policy along with the 2014 Kings Cup Team Event Requirements.

An End of Year Masters Rowing Commission Update

Late last year Rowing Australia set up the Masters Rowing Commission, chaired by John Whiting of Victoria. The ACT representative on the Commission is Susan Linacre. The purpose and make up of the Commission is set out on the. RA website here. This page also gives the minutes of the teleconferences held monthly by the Commission.

Some of the key activities of the Commission this year have involved;

1. Reviewing aspects of the AMRC, in particular the order of events, medals and handicaps.

The order of events needed to be reviewed as the number of races per session had become unbalanced with differential requirements for heats, semis and finals. A new order has been developed and is now publicly available on the 2014 AMRCRegatta Central page .

There have been two issues raised about medals. Firstly, should a medal be awarded if there is a single boat in a category? This particularly affects the older age categories, and there are strong arguments for awarding medals in such cases. This issue is also expected to be finalised shortly.

The second ‘medal issue’ is that it has been agreed that in order to encourage club rowing and to partially counter the increasing number of composite crews at the AMRC, it has been agreed that a gold medal will be awarded to the fastest ‘single club’ crew in each championship 8+ , 4+/- and 4x event, in addition to the standard medals, in the AMRC in Adelaide next year!

The handicaps to apply for masters rowing have been reviewed and new handicaps have been approved by RA to apply in 2014 AMRC. These have been provided to State Associations and are currently being included in a complete review of the Rowing Australia Rules of Racing. 2. Developing the Australian Masters Rowing Facebook page You can keep in touch with masters rowing community, and add your bit through the Facebook page. There is also interest in setting up a simple website for masters rowing in Australia. If you would like to get involved please get in touch.

3. Investigating additional masters rowing actives. The Commission is interested in supporting the development of other events, including those with a greater emphasis on the recreational side of rowing. If you have any good ideas you would like to help pursue, let the Commission know.

David Bagnall Announced as 2013 Volunteer of The Year at ACT’s Sports Star of Year

The 30th ACT Sportstar of the Year Awards were held on Friday 6 December 2013 at a function at the Tradies Club in Woden, and David Bagnall received an award as ACT Sports Volunteer of the Year. The awards are a Black Tie annual celebration of the outstanding achievements of ACT athletes, coaches and administrators and David was adjudged the outstanding sports volunteer across all sports in the ACT in 2013. He was presented with an attractive trophy by Sports Minister Andrew Barr in front of friends, and a packed room of sports identities including a large contingent from the ACT rowing community.
David commented that the award celebrates the success of the 2013 National Masters regatta that Rowing ACT hosted. This Masters event was one of the largest ever run in Australia, and was widely acknowledged as “best ever” by competitors and officials. David co-ordinated all of the early organisation of this event, wrote grant proposals for infrastructure, negotiated with stake holders and was a very active member of the Volunteer Organising Committee of the event.
David was also involved in many other volunteer roles within rowing, including coaching ACT Champion sculler Luke Letcher, a current member of the Australian under 21 rowing team.

Regatta #3 – Black Mountain Rowing Club

The Regatta Reverse Traffic Flow procedure dated 16/11/2011 will be in place throughout the Black Mountain Rowing Club Regatta. The presence of the Reverse Flow Gate indicates reverse flow is in place.

Weston Park Regatta Setup, Boating Arrangements

Weston Park will again act as the primary regatta hub. Regatta commentary will be broadcast in Weston Park as well as Lady Denman Drive. The First Aid facilities will be located in Weston Park.

Parking

Within Weston Park adequate spectator parking is available in the car park at the end of Pescott Lane. The access route will be sign posted from Weston Park road.

Weston Park trailer parking is available in the car park at the end of Pescott Lane (accessed via Pescott Lane). When entering Weston Park follow the regatta parking signs. Please insure you park trailers as close to the boat park as possible. Trailers may enter the boat park and tent area however clubs are asked to limit their foot print to ensure there is adequate space available for other clubs.

As a condition of our venue permits no boats are to be launched from boat trailers at the Lady Denman Drive site.

Please ensure when viewing from the finish area you do not park illegally. Ample parking is available on Black Mountain Peninsular which is less than a 6 minute walk from the finish line.

Catering

A Café is located adjacent to the car park off Pescott Lane which will open at 8am and serve everything you would expect from a typical café.

Weston Park Setup

Please insure you do not setup or drive vehicles or in the Additional Spectator Area as there are irrigation pipelines below the surface. This area is north of the dirt path leading from the end of Pescott Land to the water’s edge. Clubs setting up tents in this area are asked to ensure they do not use pegs longer than 200mm.

Radford Take Out the 2013 Tuggeranong Festival Cup

Congratulations to the Radford School Boy Coxed Quad of Jonathan Anderson, Mark Wilson, Patrick Hassall, Ryan Mayer and cox Angus Muller who have taken home the second Lake Tuggeranong Festival Cup. In an incredibly handicapped race the Radford crew won by 2.5 seconds ahead of the Canberra Rowing Club Men’s Coxless Quad followed by the Black Mountain Rowing Club Mixed Coxless Quad.

Thank you to all of today’s competitors for making the trip to Tuggeranong and helping make the day what it was. Congratulations and thank you to Lake Tuggeranong Rowing Club President Lyndon and his merry band of regatta organisers as well as everyone else who helped out at the regatta today.

2013 Tuggeranong Festival Cup Draw

The final draw for the Tuggeranong Festival Cup is available.

All crews will race 3 races in the first 3 rounds. The Category finals will be decided based upon the points earned during the 3 rounds. For events with more than 4 entries the points allocation has been included within the draw.

The top point scorers from each category will then progress to the category final. The winners of each final will then progress to the handicapped Champion of Champions race to compete for the Tuggeranong Festival Cup.

Call for entries – Regatta #3

Entries for Rowing ACT Regatta #3 to be hosted by the Black Mountain Rowing Club on 7 December 2013, close 5pm Wednesday the 27th of November. Clubs that have not submited their entries by the deadline will not be able to participate.
