As you will have noticed it’s the time of the year again when many teams are visiting Canberra to complete training camps. I have recently received many emails and personally witnessed quite a few traffic violations which had the potential to cause serious injury. In addition last Friday there was a serious collision on the rowing cause where a coxless four T-boned a coxed quad at race pace. Fortunately no one was seriously harmed, however reports suggest if the four had been inches of the course they were on or the quad had not stopped when they had the consequences would have been dire.

Over the past week I have personally contacted each club hosting interstate visitors to insure they take responsibility for insuring the visitors are aware of the traffic patterns and regulations. Furthermore I have made sure to follow up with hosting clubs any reports of incorrect procedure.

I would like to also plead with local rowers to take extreme caution. We must all understand that the lake is incredibly busy this time of year and must make every effort avoid such incidents. We must all remain vigilant.

Personally I spent many years operating large commercial vessels. One of the most significant guidelines I learnt was to always make your intentions clear. That is, do not leave any doubt as to your direction and speed. I would ask all local rowers to follow local rules to insure we all set a good example, in addition to making sure we do not leave visiting crews with any doubts about our intentions which often lead to incorrect dangerous decisions.

Radford College will be conducting their annual boat camp on the lake from Sunday 20 January until Friday 25 January.

On Sunday morning from about 7:00am we will run a sculling time trial on the course as part of our selection process. Scullers will be in lane 7 and will be carrying a bow number on their boat to indicate that they are racing.

We would like to ask that coaches from other programs please keep speedboat wash to a minimum at this time.

The time trial should be completed by 8:30am.

Thank you for your co operation and best wishes for the season ahead.

Rowing Australia has recently appointed a Masters Rowing Commission with representatives from each State and Territory. Details are given on the Rowing Australia Website. The ACT representative is Susan Linacre. At the first meeting of the Masters Rowing Commission, held by teleconference on Tuesday 8 January, it was agreed that an early activity of the Commission was to develop and communicate its charter. Susan Linacre is on a subcommittee charged with developing a draft of this charter and would be interested in the views of ACT Masters Rowers on what the purpose of the Masters Commission should be. It would be helpful if you could provide your views on the key things that Rowing Australia should be contributing to masters rowing in Australia. She would also be interested in hearing of key issues, problems and potential solutions related to masters rowing in Australia from your perspective. She can be contacted on sjlinacre@gmail.com . Comments in relation to the Charter of the Commission would need to be received by close of business on 14th January to be taken into account, however more general comments relating to the role of Rowing Australia in masters rowing, are welcome any time.

The second annual Head of the Molonglo was held for this morning in perfect conditions on Lake Burley Griffin.
Fourteen crews participated (the same number as the initial Head of the Yarra!). The wind picked up after the last crew finished and we had superb conditions for the race.
The association is aware that north side clubs were inconvenienced by road closures for the Iron man triathlon. These road closures were listed on the NCA website but the local ramifications were not apparent to RACT. So excellent perseverance of the various northside rowers to surmount this hurdle to get to the start line.

Great work for all crews.
I would like to thank all our volunteer traffic marshals.
We managed this event with a great effort from club volunteers, while our Exec Officer was in Canberra Hospital.

I commend those volunteer traffic marshals, Marist parents for providing the barbecue and Michael Cusack for his help at the start and finish.
I visited James Hammond at Canberra Hospital and he was operated on this morning (during the race) and he is recovering from his appendectomy.
I informed him that the event had run perfectly.
