Black Mountain Rowing Club Annual Dinner

The Black Mountain Rowing Club Annual Dinner is on Saturday 22 October from 6.30 pm at the Canberra Bowling Club, Hobart Ave, Forrest.

Tickets will be $30/$25 for students, payable on the night. Please RSVP to Yvonne Poels ellacott.poels@gmail.com so we can know how many will turn up.

Our guest speaker is Nick McDonald Crowley, and we will also shine the spotlight on the Radford lads who acquitted themselves so well in Henley.

The dinner will have a Henley theme…so bring out your blazers, hats and posh frocks, and girls you can dress up too!

The menu will include hors d’oeuvres, a sumptuous curry buffet, and sweet treats with tea and coffee. Wine and other drinks are not included and can be purchased from the bar.

We welcome members of the ACT rowing community joining us.

Calling Volunteers for the 2013 Masters Organising Committee

In 2013 Rowing ACT will host the Australian National Masters Championships on Lake Burley Griffin. This will no doubt be one of the biggest regattas held in Canberra for quite some time. For this event to be a success Rowing ACT will require a small army of helpers. To begin the process the Rowing ACT Executive will establish a committee charged with organising the event. We are currently seeking expressions of interest from members of the Canberra rowing community to fill key organisational roles.

A draft organisational structure outlining the key roles and responsibilities can be found here.

Latest on Yarramundi Reach Buoyed Course: Update from the NCA

Please be advised as follows in regards to the status on the Yarramundi Reach Rowing Course as of Friday 23 September 2011:

Three personnel have been working on the project in the past week.
The 30 longitudinal cables, both the SS terminals and the points for the buoys and weights where the O rings are to be attached are all complete and have been made up under tension.
The laterals will be worked on next.
Ian Dickinson has advised that little work will occur this week but has confirmed that works are still on schedule.

News – Rowing ACT to Comment on NCA SolarBee Trials

David Bagnall, President of Rowing ACT will today comment on the instillation of two SolarBees on Lake Burley Griffin. It is hoped the SolorBees will assist in controlling algal blooms on the lake. WTT #5 Start Lists 24-25 September – Including changes

Note: racing will commence at 8am

Please note there has been a change to the start lists. These changes incorporate some withdrawals, additions and a classification issue. There has been no change of Bow Numbers. Changes made 23/09/11 12:15pm.

Please take the time to read the following information.

INSTRUCTIONS TO COMPETITORS

• It is the responsibility of crews to ensure they are at the start on time (any crew who misses their allocated start time may be started at the end of the field). Crews should pay particular attention to the start time rather than boat number as some numbers may be missing.

• Clubs should ensure that scullers and crews have the skill and experience to complete the course under adverse weather conditions.

• Crews and scullers should take note of normal traffic rules on the way to the start.

• Slower crews should ensure that crews overtaking have space to pass on the most direct course.

• If you capsize during racing stay with your boat until a safety marshal arrives. Remember that your boat will float even when it is full of water.

BOW NUMBERS

Bow numbers will be available for collection from Black Mountain Rowing Club from 6:30am on Saturday.

OFFICIALS

Officials are required to meet at the Black Mountain Rowing Club at 7:15am on the morning of each trial for a briefing. Wherever possible bring a tinnie and a megaphone. PFDs will be supplied for all officials.

Yarramundi Buoyed Course update

Ken Gibson of the NCA has forwarded this message from Joel Stevenson of Brown Consulting who is the Supervising Engineer for the replacement buoyed course.
It refers to his conversations with Ian Dickinson, the Tasmanian responsible for laying our original course and those at most other venues in Australia and SE Asia.

I received an email from Ian and he has advised me that the majority of equipment has arrived except for a couple of major items. Manufacturing of the smaller items has commenced and work on the cables is due to commence next week.

Ian has advised that they intend to be on the Lake soon after 22 October 2011, which I understand is after the date for the Dragon Boat Regatta.

I will continue to request updates on progress and provide you weekly updates on the status.

LAKE BURLEY GRIFFIN OPEN

Lake Burley Griffin is now open to all sporting and recreational uses.

The lake has been closed since Friday morning, following a factory fire in Mitchell last week.

The Environment Protection Authority has advised that water quality results indicate the lake is safe for use.

Black Mountain Rowing Club Coaching Position

Black Mountain Rowing Club seeks a coach for a junior rowing program commencing October 2011.

The coach will run at least 2 coaching sessions a week, will need to be reliable, punctual, have good communication skills and be available to assist at local rowing regattas.

Applicants will need

• Level 1 Rowing Coach Accreditation,

• to undertake a Police Check, and

• have a NSW boat license

• The position is casual with a per session rate
