LAKE BURLEY GRIFFIN STILL CLOSED

Lake Burley Griffin will remain closed to all sporting and recreational uses until further notice.

The National Capital Authority will advise when the Environment Protection Authority gives the all clear to reopen the lake.

Lake Burley Griffin has been closed following a factory fire in Mitchell on Thursday night.

Contaminated materials from the factory may have entered Sullivans Creek, which flows into Lake Burley Griffin.

Due to the current lake closure the Rowing ACT Winter Time Trial scheduled for this weekend has been postponed to next weekend, 24th and 25th September. To accommodate those already committed to the Level 2 coaching course, racing will commence at 8:00am rather than the usual 9:30am.

Please note Lake Burley Griffin remains closed until further notice. It is anticipated the NCA will receive the first water quality results tomorrow afternoon. We will monitor the situation and post information as we receive it. Included below, for your information, is the Lake closure notification issued by the NCA.

Rowing ACT


Lake Burley Griffin will remain closed to all sporting and recreational uses until further notice, following a factory fire in Mitchell overnight.

The NCA was advised by the Environment Protection Authority to close Lake Burley Griffin as a precautionary measure. Contaminated materials from the factory may have entered Sullivans Creek, which flows into Lake Burley Griffin.

The NCA anticipates receiving the first water quality results tomorrow afternoon.

Water features, such as the Capital Cook Memorial Jet, and irrigation systems that rely on water from Lake Burley Griffin have been stopped.

Ferry services will continue operating where patrons are protected from incidental exposure to lake water.

Any possible contamination from the Mitchell factory fire into Sullivans Creek is unknown at this stage.

The NCA will continue to closely monitor water quality.

Lake User groups have been notified and warning signs posted.

This morning’s chemical fire in Mitchell has resulted in the immediate closure of Lake Burley Griffin. This is a precautionary measure, as Mitchell is part of the Sullivan’s Creek and Lake Burley Griffin catchment.

We will be in contact with the National Capital Authority throughout the day, and will send out an update this afternoon. If you are entered in this weekend’s Winter Time Trials, please check this website late this afternoon to confirm whether or not the lake has reopened and tomorrows Time Trial will proceed.

INSTRUCTIONS TO COMPETITORS

• It is the responsibility of crews to ensure they are at the start on time (any crew who misses their allocated start time may be started at the end of the field). Crews should pay particular attention to the start time rather than boat number as some numbers may be missing.

• Clubs should ensure that scullers and crews have the skill and experience to complete the course under adverse weather conditions.

• Crews and scullers should take note of normal traffic rules on the way to the start.

• Slower crews should ensure that crews overtaking have space to pass on the most direct course.

• If you capsize during racing stay with your boat until a safety marshal arrives. Remember that your boat will float even when it is full of water.

BOW NUMBERS

Bow numbers will be available for collection from Black Mountain Rowing Club from 8am on Saturday.

OFFICIALS

Officials are required to meet at the Black Mountain Rowing Club at 8:45am on the morning of each trial for a briefing. Wherever possible bring a tinnie and a megaphone. PFDs will be supplied for all officials.

The Rowing ACT Level 1 (Learn to Row) coaching course scheduled for 16th October is now full. Applications received hereafter will be waitlisted.

Last Sunday there was a very near incident on the lake caused by a gate breakage on a single scull. This is a salient reminder of the risk of rowing in the winter in Canberra when the water temperatures are very low. Cold water can kill! Sudden immersion in cold water below 15C is potentially dangerous. The effects of cold water mean that even healthy, good swimmers can drown after a short period of time in the water. The UK Adopt the ‘One minute – One degree rule’ helps plan rescue ie. if the water temperature is 10C assume you will have 10 minutes of time to usefully get yourself out of the water.

The following (Potomac River Safety website) are recommendations for rowing (particularly in singles) in the winter in Canberra:

• Let others know you will be on the lake and when.
• Four Oar Rule- the boat must have a minimum of 4 oars on the water, or
• Buddy System- if individuals go out they should do so in pairs.
• Wear inflatable, compact, life vest or wet suit.
• Stay closer to shore.
• A noise maker of some kind should be carried in each shell and be attached in some manner so as not to be lost if the shell capsizes.

However, the only true safety device or practice other than common sense is a support/coaching launch. In the event of an emergency a well-prepared safety launch can assist the individuals in question and transport them to safety. Even then hypothermia is an issue. All individuals should ask themselves before launching if being on the water is the best and only way to train.

If there is a capsize it is a priority to get as much of your body out of the water as quickly as possible. The best way to do this is to lie across the upturned hull of the boat.

Annually, the rowing community holds Australia’s longest and toughest race, the ‘Murray Rowathon’, as a fund raiser in support of the Royal Flying Doctors Service please see www.murrayrowathon.com.

This is the major annual event when rowers give back to the community.

In 2010 the rowing community gave nearly $20,000.00 to the Flying Doctors and this year, with your support, the organisers would like to raise $30,000.00 or more for the Royal Flying Doctors Service.

Organisers are currently seeking both participants, and sponsors for those doing it tough on the day.

All athletes are required to weigh-in at the ACTAS shed from 530-615am. No weigh-in and you won’t be allowed to start.

Athletes are to wear club/school uniform or ACTAS (if with ACTAS). No other rowing suits please. You won’t be allowed to start.

Please be on time for the trial. First boat 7.00am.

If conditions are poor the RACT Winter Time Trial Course will be used.
